Paje is Zanzibar's adventure coast — a long, flat stretch of white sand on the southeast shore that transforms into a kitesurfing paradise when the trade winds blow. At low tide, the reef flats extend hundreds of metres, revealing tidal pools, starfish, and seaweed farms tended by local women. The village has an authentic, bohemian energy: beachfront cafes serve fresh-pressed juice, backpacker lodges sit alongside boutique hotels, and the vibe is relaxed, creative, and welcoming.
Best Time to Visit
June to October and December to February offer the best wind conditions for kitesurfing (15-25 knots). The kite season peaks July to September. For non-kiters, the same periods offer the driest weather and clearest water.
What You'll See
The Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is just 20 minutes from Paje — home to the endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus monkey. At low tide, reef walks reveal sea urchins, starfish, small octopuses, and colourful reef fish in tidal pools.
Getting There
Paje is 50 km (approximately 45 minutes) east of Zanzibar Airport. The road passes through Jozani Forest, making it easy to combine the drive with a forest visit. Most hotels arrange transfers.
