Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about safari and golf in the Serengeti - from equipment and course access to visas and booking.

Quick Answers

Is there a golf course in the Serengeti?

Yes. The Serengeti National Park Golf Course is an 18-hole, Par 72 championship course located on the edge of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is the only golf course situated within a major African national park, and wildlife — including elephants, giraffes, wildebeest, and zebra — roams freely across the fairways during play.

How much does a Safari + Golf journey in Tanzania cost?

Safari + Golf packages in Tanzania typically range from $2,500 to $8,000 per person for 4-7 day itineraries, depending on accommodation grade, season, route, golf inclusions, and transfer style. Luxury fly-in packages with 5-star lodges start from approximately $5,000 per person. Packages can include green fees, game drives, accommodation, internal flights, park fees, and 24/7 support.

Can you play golf during the Great Migration?

Yes. The Serengeti National Park Golf Course is open year-round, and the Great Wildebeest Migration passes through the Serengeti from approximately June to October. This is the prime season for Safari + Golf journeys: you can plan wildlife time around the migration and add a round when conditions fit the itinerary.

What is the best golf course in Africa?

The Serengeti National Park Golf Course is the only championship course in Africa where golfers play alongside Big Five wildlife with no fences. While South Africa has world-class courses like Leopard Creek and Fancourt, the Serengeti offers a uniquely immersive experience: 18 holes at 1,500m elevation on Kikuyu grass fairways, with elephants and giraffes sharing the landscape.
The Golf Course
Can I bring my own golf clubs?
Yes, you can bring your own clubs. However, for fly-in safaris with strict luggage limits (15-20kg on bush planes), we recommend renting. The pro shop stocks TaylorMade M6 and Callaway Rogue sets in excellent condition. Rental includes a full set, bag, and unlimited practice balls.
What is the dress code on the course?
The course maintains a smart-casual dress code: collared polo shirts, tailored shorts or trousers (no denim), and soft-spike golf shoes. Metal spikes are not permitted. A golf cap or wide-brimmed hat is encouraged for sun protection.
Is the course open year-round?
The course operates year-round with potential temporary closures during heavy rains in March-April. The prime season is June through October (dry season), when wildlife viewing is strong and fairways are firm. We recommend booking Safari + Golf journeys for this window.
How do wildlife encounters work during a round?
Wildlife roams freely across the course — there are no fences. Trained course rangers accompany every group and maintain safe distances. If elephants or wildebeest cross your fairway, you wait for them to pass. These moments are the unique magic of playing the Serengeti. Local rules provide free relief for any lie affected by wildlife activity.
What is the course difficulty like?
The course is a Par 72, 7,065m championship layout with a course rating of 73.2 and slope of 132 from the championship tees. Multiple tee boxes accommodate all levels. The altitude (~1,500m) adds 5-10% distance to shots, and wind can be a factor on the back nine.
Booking & Logistics
How far in advance should I book?
For peak season (July-September), we recommend booking 6-12 months ahead. Shoulder season (June, October-November) requires 3-6 months notice. Green season can often be arranged with 4-8 weeks lead time. Corporate events and tournaments require 12+ months planning.
What is included in a Safari + Golf package?
All our packages include green fees, caddie fees, shared golf cart, airport transfers, safari game drives with professional guides, full-board accommodation at luxury lodges, internal flights (for fly-in packages), park entrance fees, and 24/7 on-ground support. International flights and travel insurance are not included.
Can I customize my itinerary?
Absolutely. Every Safari + Golf journey is tailored to your preferences. You can choose safari destinations, lodge grade, group size, number of golf rounds, and extensions like Zanzibar beach stays, Ngorongoro Crater visits, or hot air balloon rides. Contact us with your wish list and we will design the perfect trip.
What is the cancellation policy?
Full refund if cancelled 60+ days before departure. 50% refund for 30-59 days. No refund within 30 days. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering cancellation, medical evacuation, and trip interruption. We can recommend specialist safari insurance providers.
Travel Requirements
Do I need a visa for Tanzania?
Most nationalities require a visa. Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and many other countries can obtain an e-visa online at visa.immigration.go.tz before travel, or a visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Processing takes 3-5 business days online. Cost is approximately $50 USD for a single-entry tourist visa.
What vaccinations do I need?
Yellow Fever vaccination is required if arriving from an endemic country. Recommended (but not mandatory from non-endemic origins): Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Polio boosters. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended — consult your travel medicine clinic 6-8 weeks before departure.
How do I get to the course?
Most guests fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). From there, we arrange a transfer to Arusha (1 hour) or a direct bush flight to the Serengeti (1.5 hours). Our fly-in packages include all internal flights. Road transfers from Arusha to the Serengeti take approximately 8 hours via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Partnerships & Events
Can you host corporate golf events?
Yes. The Serengeti NP Golf Course can host corporate tournaments, incentive trips, and exclusive buyouts. We handle logistics end-to-end: flights, accommodation, tournament management, prize-giving dinners, and safari extensions. Contact us for a bespoke corporate proposal.
Do you work with travel agents?
We welcome partnerships with travel agents, tour operators, and DMCs worldwide. We offer competitive agent commissions, co-branded marketing materials, FAM trip invitations, and dedicated agent support. Contact us to join our partner programme.
Are there group discounts?
Groups of 8+ golfers receive preferential rates and priority tee times. Groups of 16+ qualify for additional perks including complimentary transfers, welcome dinners, and dedicated group coordinators. Contact us for a custom group quotation.
