Golf Safari Packing List: Clubs, Safari Gear & Everything Between

By Serengeti Golf Safaris Team

Two Trips in One Bag

A golf safari demands dual packing — course gear and bush gear — often under strict luggage weight limits imposed by bush flights. The key is overlap: neutral-toned golf shirts double as safari wear, and your rain jacket works on both the fairway and in a Land Cruiser.

Golf Equipment: Bring or Rent?

Option Pros Cons Cost
Bring your own Familiar clubs, confidence Airline oversize fee, weight, damage risk $100–200 baggage fees
Rent at the course No transport hassle, modern gear (Callaway, TaylorMade) Unfamiliar clubs $30–50 per round

If your trip involves bush flights (Arusha to Serengeti), rent clubs. Light aircraft enforce 15–20 kg luggage limits, and a golf bag alone weighs 10–15 kg. If driving between lodges, bringing your own is practical.

If Bringing Clubs

  • Travel bag: Hard-shell or padded soft case
  • Club selection: Bring 10–12 clubs — leave the full 14-club set at home. You will not need a lob wedge on wide African fairways
  • Golf balls: Bring 18–24. African rough swallows balls — budget for losing 3–5 per round
  • Tees, glove, ball markers: Pack extras; supply is limited in remote locations

Always Bring (Even If Renting)

  • Golf shoes: Broken-in soft-spike shoes
  • Golf glove: Your preferred brand and size
  • Rangefinder: Course yardage markers may be limited

Safari Clothing

Wear khaki, olive, tan, grey, and brown on both the course and game drives. Bright colors disturb wildlife; dark blue and black attract tsetse flies.

  • Collared golf shirts x 4: Moisture-wicking, UPF-rated, neutral tones — double as safari shirts
  • Long-sleeve button-down x 2: Sun and insect protection on game drives
  • Trousers/shorts x 3: Lightweight, quick-dry. Long trousers for evening dinners
  • Warm fleece x 1: Dawn drives at 1,200m+ altitude start at 15–18°C with windchill
  • Rain jacket x 1: Lightweight, packable
  • Wide-brim hat x 1: Non-negotiable at equatorial altitude

Sun and Insect Protection

  • Sunscreen SPF50+ x 2: Apply every 2 hours. Altitude increases burn risk
  • Lip balm with SPF: Burns fast at altitude
  • Polarized sunglasses: UV400, wraparound style
  • Insect repellent (DEET 30–50%): Apply at dusk and dawn
  • Antimalarial medication: Consult your travel doctor 4–6 weeks before departure

Camera and Electronics

  • Camera + zoom lens (200–400mm): Even a 70–300mm kit lens produces excellent safari shots
  • Power bank (20,000mAh+): Limited charging points at bush camps
  • Universal plug adapter: Tanzania uses Type D and G sockets
  • Zip-lock bags: Protect electronics from pervasive Serengeti dust

Bush Flight Luggage Limits

Airline Weight Limit Bag Type
Coastal Aviation 15 kg + 5 kg hand Soft-sided only
Auric Air 15 kg + 5 kg hand Soft-sided only
Safari Airlink 20 kg total Soft-sided preferred

No hard-shell suitcases — they do not fit in Cessna Caravan cargo holds. Use a soft duffel bag. Golf hard cases are impossible on these flights.

Tip: Wear your heaviest items (fleece, golf shoes, rain jacket) onto the aircraft. Worn items are not weighed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do laundry at safari lodges?

Yes. Nearly all lodges offer same-day laundry (included at luxury lodges, $5–15 per load at mid-range). Four shirts and 3 trousers cover a 10-day trip with regular washing.

What about binoculars?

Highly recommended but not essential — your guide carries a pair. If you own 8x42 or 10x42 binoculars, bring them. Otherwise, do not buy a pair just for this trip.

Should I bring a golf cart?

No. Push carts are impractical on African terrain. Motorized carts are available ($20–30/round), or walk with a caddie ($15–20 plus tip). Walking increases wildlife encounters.
